How much do you need?
Most manufacturers of sports nutrition products are aware of glutamine's
benefits, and it has become fashionable to add the substance to
everything from protein powders to meal replacements.
The problem is
that glutamine is expensive, so many of these enhanced products contain
only a sprinkling of glutamine. Some manufacturers would like you to
believe that a few hundred milligrams per day should have you covered.
Not so.
The suggested
supplemented amount falls between 8 and 20 grams per day depending on
your dietary intake, health, and intensity and frequency of workout. It
seems logical that supplementing 3-6 grams 2-4 times per day would
elicit a positive response without stimulating the excretion of
glutamine, which has been shown to occur in large dosages because of
liver glutamine removal.
