What Do Healthy Kidneys Do ?

What Do Healthy Kidneys Do ?

a

Healthy kidneys have several important functions, including the production of urine. These functions are:

1. Healthy kidneys maintain water balance by removing excess fluid from our body.

2. Healthy kidneys remove waste products, There are many chemical reactions that take place in our body to maintain life. This process is called metabolism. Metabolism results in waste products that become toxic (poisonous) if they are left to accumulate in our body. The healthy kidneys make sure you keep the right amounts of these chemicals and get rid of those we don't need.

3. Healthy kidneys maintain normal blood chemistry. A number of chemicals such as potassium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium and chloride are important to our blood chemistry. Healthy kidneys make sure we keep the right amounts of these chemicals and get rid of those we don't need.

Besides, kidneys also make three important hormones - renin, erythropoietin and calcitriol:

  • Renin helps increases blood pressure. If blood flow through the kidneys is reduced, extra renin is released and may cause high blood pressure.

  • Erythropoietin helps maintain the right amount of blood in your body (blood volume) by stimulating our bone marrow to make more red blood cells. Too little erythropoietin causes anemia, making a person look pale and feel weak.

  • Calcitriol help your body absorb calcium from the food we eat. Our bones need calcium to stay strong and healthy.
