The word yoga
comes from Sanskrit and means "union" or "yoking". Yoga originated in
India between 5000 and 6000 years ago as a science to help prepare the
body and mind to function at their peak levels. Six major branches of
yoga exist; some are more physical than others, some have more
pronounced spiritual components.
For many
practitioners, yoga is a way of life and includes careful attention to
diet and to the spiritual and emotional dimensions of the self. But yoga
can also be practiced simply for its physical benefits.
The
discipline was introduced to the United States in 1893 at the Chicago
World's Fair by a famous Indian sage, Swami Vivekananda. Its practice
has spread to all parts of the country and yoga is now taught at many
fitness centers, even Gold's Gym in Venice, California.
