The higher intensity of muscle involvement when doing fast walking helps to maintain and, in some cases, even improve muscle strength. Walking uphill at a fast pace is very effective for development of the gluteus maximus and hamstrings.

To maximize the benefits of fast walking, use safe and effective techniques. Some experts maintain that walking should be kept simple and you should do what comes naturally. However, this doesn't guarantee that you are walking most effectively.

How you walk is an accumulation of what you have learned over the years; it is not something you are born with. How you walk may not be the most effective style, especially as you increase your strength and flexibility levels. By making slight modifications and emphasizing key elements, you can increase the benefits derived from fast walking.
