In contrast, dumbbells allow complete freedom of movement and are the ultimately adaptable tools to allow for not just person-to-person differences in body build and musculoskeletal capacities, but also for variations from one side of your body to the other. They also allow the greatest range of motion and the potential for horizontal abduction - moving the arms from in front of the body to the sides - as the arms are raised .

Particularly important in terms of bodybuilding injury, dumbbells ( and some machines ) allow you to press with wrists in a neutral position (palms facing one another). This can help you keep your arms and shoulders in the correct groove and reduce the risk of impingement. Dumbbells are what most athletes and bodybuilders usually use after generally beginning with barbells and later incorporating machines to add variety and isolation movements.
