What is Zinc ?
Zinc is an essential mineral required
by every cell in the body. It is present in nearly all body tissues,
especially the thyroid, pancreas and reproductive organs. Our body
contains about 2-3g of Zinc, 60% is found in muscle, 30% in bone and
about 5% in our skin. Particularly high concentrations are in the
prostate gland and semen. Men need more Zinc than women because male
semen contains 100 times more Zinc than it is found in the blood. The
more sexually active a man is the more Zinc he will require. The
recommended amount of Zinc for adult men is 1/3 higher than those for
women. It is plentiful in drinking water and in some food, including
meat. Our body does not produce Zinc, therefore, it depends on external
sources for its supply.
Zinc plays a critical role in hundreds
of body process - from cell growth to sexual maturation and immunity,
even for taste and smell. Zinc is involved in the body's
enzymatic reactions, the synthesis of proteins and in carbohydrate
metabolism. It stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes,
which are substances that promote biochemical reactions in our body.
The functions of Zinc
Zinc supports a healthy immune system,
is needed for wound healing, helps maintain our sense of taste and
smell, and is needed for DNA synthesis. Zinc also supports normal growth
