Vitamin K

Vitamin K

Vitamin K affects clotting of the blood, but it also influences the bone strength and the health of the arteries. A specific form of vitamin K is found in green vegetables, cheese, liver, yogurt, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, beans, lean meat and soy beans.

Low vitamin K in the blood may be associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and extra supplements of vitamin K may be necessary to boost bone health.

In a few experiments, vitamin K was found to play a role in Alzheimer's disease, but it is too early for definite conclusions yet.

Vitamin K is available in tablet or injection form, but it is not widely used as a health supplement at present. In the meantime, it may be worth choosing vitamin K rich food from the list above.
