Vitamin B12 comes in different forms. A particular form, methyl-cobolamin is promoted as being effective in reducing brain cell damage, as well as protecting the nerves from free radical injury. Vitamin B12 is thought to protect against the effects of the amino acid homocysteine, which plays an active part in causing heart disease.

Sources of vitamin B12 are clams, beef or lamb's liver, mackerel, pilchards, sardines and other oily fish. Vitamin B12 is also available in tablets, capsules or lozenges.
