Glutathione

Glutathione

The used of amino acids (building blocks of proteins) as dietary supplements is back in fashion again. The amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine combine to form glutathione which prevents age-related damage to the body.

Glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants produced by the body during everyday activities. glutathione is found in fresh fruit and vegetables but cooking can destroy large amounts of it. Researchers found that people who lived to be over 100 years old are endowed with high concentrations of glutathione in their blood and are therefore well protected against aging. Most people over the age of 60, however, have low glutathione and this makes free radical damage more likely. One study showed that almost 80 percent of patients admitted to hospital with chronic disease have low glutathione in their blood.

Too much fat in the diet increases the need for glutathione, which struggles to neutralize the fat-related damage. Scientists use glutathione measurements in the blood to help to estimate the biological age of the individual.

Glutathione comes in tablet form, but good natural sources include:

  • avocado
  • watermelon
  • asparagus
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • tomatoes
  • fresh lean red meat
