Fatty Acids

Fatty Acids

Fat is essential to life. Without it our skin would shrink and sag, our cells would disintegrate and our brain would stop working. What we need to avoid is too much of the wrong kind of fat. Consuming the right type of fat, on the other hand, can optimize our fight against aging.

Take for example, omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are the essential agents which help lower blood pressure, prevent abnormal clotting of the blood and prevent thickening of the arteries. In this way heart attacks and stroke can be prevented. Other age-busting effects of omega 3 fatty acids include an improvement in rheumatoid arthritis and in osteoarthritis. Consuming omega 3 fatty acids regularly can reduce the risk of cancer of the bowel or cancer of the ovaries.

Tuna, salmon, pilchards, herring, trout, anchovies, whitebait, sardines and mackerel are rich in fatty acids. It is best to eat these kind of fish frequently - twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease substantially - but there is also the alternative of taking fish oil supplements in the form of capsules.

Another source of essential fatty acids is flax oil and flax seeds. These are available from health food stores. Flax seed extract can also be taken in capsule or liquid form.

Omega-3 fatty acids can also be found in perilla oil. Perilla oil prevents certain types of heart disease, fights chronic inflammation and maintains the cells in good condition. Perilla oil comes from the beef steak plant known as Perilla frutescens. It is frequently used by East Asians and it is available from some health shops in capsule form. Perilla oil doesn't cause indigestion, which is a problem commonly encountered with other forms of oils.
