Thalassaemia Carrier

Thalassaemia-Carrier

Individuals with Thalassaemia trait are sometimes unaware that they are carrying disease as they are perfectly healthy and appear as normal as everyone else. However. they can pass Thalassaemia major (full-blown version of the disease) to their children.

If two people carry the trait for the same genetic type of Thalassaemia and have a child, there is a 25% chance in each pregnancy that the child will inherit a serious blood disease (thalassaemia major) .

Screening for Thalassaemia

Even if there is no history of Thalassaemia in your family, it's no guarantee that your are not a carrier. Only with a Thalassaemia screen test are you able to know for sure. Ideally, every couple should be tested for Thalassaemia before they get married or have children.
