Prevention is
better than cure ! The most effective way to avoid getting a dengue
disease is to avoid mosquito bites !!
1)
Repellents
These are the
best ways of protecting yourself from mosquito bites. Many different
types of formulations are available, including sprays, roll-no sticks
and gels. Most contain the chemical diethyltoluamide (DEET) which has
become accepted as the 'gold standard' by which all others are judged.
Unfortunately, its solvent properties make it messy to use and some
people find its smell unpleasant, so alternatives have been sought.
Although certain natural substances such as citronella have a degree of
repellency they do not match DEET. The recent discovery of highly active
natural repellents in Eucalyptus oil, at least as effective as DEET has
now changes all that. DEET can more safely and effectively be applied to
cotton toweling bands and worn around the ankles when sitting outside in
the evening to repel mosquitoes which are particularly fond of biting
ankles.
2)
Clothing
Covering
exposed skin with long trousers and long sleeved shirts is recommended
after dark. Boots, with trousers tucked into socks, should be worn in
long grass to stop tick attacks and a repellent or insecticide sprayed
onto the material gives added protection from mosquito bites.
