Evening Primrose Oil - Multiple Sclerosis, Premenstrual Syndrome

Evening Primrose Oil and Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

One of the factors thought to play a part in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the auto immune system. Research suggest that those suffering from MS are deficient in prostaglandins which results in a weakened immune system and increases susceptibility to auto immune damage.

Evening primrose oil is believed to work in the following ways: stimulate T-lymphocytes, stop platelets from clumping, make faulty red blood cells return to normal, strengthen blood vessel walls, act as an anti viral agent, maintain the nervous system and a healthy balance between Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1 - good guy) and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 - bad guy).

Evening Primrose Oil and Premenstrual Syndrome

Studies report 90% of women with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) get dramatic relief by using evening primrose oil. Relief was seen in cramping, weight gain, mood changes, breast discomfort, anxiety, irritability, headaches and fluid retention.

Research shows that women with endometriosis and dysmenorrheal (painful menstruation) also have an imbalance of prostaglandins. Evening primrose oil has been reported from members of the British Endometriosis Society to offer relief from symptoms often associated with endometriosis. Such symptoms include chronic pain, fatigue, irritability, rapid mood swings, cramping, and heavy bleeding.
