DEET Insect Repellents

DEET Insect Repellents

What is DEET ?

DEET (N, N diethyl-m-toluamide) is the active ingredient commonly used in insect repellents that are applied to the skin. It was developed more than 50 years ago by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for use by the U.S. military. DEET based insect repellents has been registered in the United States for use by the general public since 1957.

Is DEET safe ?

By closely following label directions, DEET is generally regarded as safe to use on people of any age, including children. This is backed up by more than 40 years of consumer use and scientific research.

Which DEET concentration should I use ?

DEET based insect repellents are available in a variety of concentrations. Higher percentage of DEET (stated on the product labeling) deliver longer protection.

You should select a DEET concentration based on:

1) Type of outdoor activity.

2) Length of time you will be outdoors

For example, a deep-woods day hike would require a higher DEET concentration than a backyard barbecue. Higher concentrations are also recommended for all outdoor activities in geographic regions with large populations of insects or ticks. Lower concentrations will usually provide adequate protection when insects population (or density) are low (or not bothersome) or when you only need to be outdoors for few hours.
