Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can kill you if you breathe too much of it. About 1000 Americans a year die from accidental carbon monoxide inhalation, and 10 times as many are treated for exposure to the deadly gas.

Many common household items - such as faulty gas ranges, kerosene space heaters, clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves - can emit carbon monoxide. It's also a component of automobile exhaust and cigarette smoke.

To safeguard yourself and your family, have your appliances inspected regularly for leaks and other malfunctions. It's also a good idea to get a carbon-monoxide detector. They cost between $35 and $100 and can be found in most hardware stores.

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may be confused with the flu and include headaches, dizziness, nausea and fatigue. Continued exposure can cause vomiting, confusion, heart problems, coma and death. If you feel any symptoms, get fresh air and medical help right away.
