Bed Nets
These are the best form of protection
to avoid mosquito bites at night. A net should always be checked on
entry for the presence of unwelcome mosquitoes who may be waiting
inside. It should then be carefully tucked in. Nets should be looked
after properly and any holes repaired immediately. Since it is possible
that your limb can come into contact with net when asleep, we highly
recommend that your net is dipped in insecticide (permethrin) which
repels or kills mosquito, such treatment lasts 6 months. New, wide mesh
impregnated nets offer the same protection but with much better
ventilation.
Mosquito Coils / Vaporizing Mats /
Sprays
Mosquito coils contain pyrethroids or
pyrethrum and can be bought cheaply in most tropical countries. They can
be used on a verandah where they should be placed upwind and on the
floor to deter ankle seeking mosquitoes bite. The modern equivalent of
coils are vaporizing mats which require electricity but have generally
been found to be more effective than coils when used inside a closed
room. Aerosol 'knockdown' sprays (which also contain pyrethroids or
pyrethrum) can be used to kill any mosquitoes that have entered the room
during the day or may have got inside your mosquito net.
Windows
To stop mosquitoes entering windows
should be shut at dusk. Where mosquito screens have been fitted, check
they are not damaged. Minor repairs can be made by pushing a pledget of
cotton wool into the tear with a matchstick. Air conditioning also
deters entry. Sound emitting devices have been shown to be ineffective
to avoid mosquito bites.
