People who stand for long periods are
more likely to develop varicose veins. Sometimes pregnancy and tight
stockings can make them worse. The problem is that varicose veins are
not only unsightly for some but can also cause pain and discoloration of
the affected area.
Varicose veins develop easily in the
legs, but can also appear in the veins of the anus (the familiar
hemorrhoids) or the veins of the esophagus (the gullet) in some patients
with severe liver problems.
Several treatments have been suggested
but the most effective are injections with special material or an
operation to remove the affected vein. Special elastic support stockings
may help delay the progress of the problem. Other treatments are:
- horse chestnut supplements, which
contain the astringent chemical aescin
- massage with cypress oil
- alternating cold and hot baths
- hazel or cotu kola herbal teas or
supplements
Externally applied marigold has been
used by some varicose veins sufferers. Homoeopathic treatments are carbo veg, hamamelis
and pulsatilla. Nutritional supplements include antioxidants and
lecithin. Suitable exercises are swimming and yoga (headstand position).
Ways to avoid varicose veins:
- Avoid tight socks or stockings
- If you can, keep your feet up when
you sit down
- Avoid crossing your legs when
sitting
- Take regular breaks from long
periods of standing on your feet
- Perform regular foot exercises
such as circling your toes and ankles
