Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men after lung cancer. As life expectancy increases and men live longer, the cases of prostate cancer will also increase. Asians (who consume large quantities of soya) are 100 times less likely to develop prostate cancer than Western men.

A few scientists think that the isoflavone genistein blocks prostate cancer cells from developing and it may both prevent and treat prostate cancer. Also, saw palmetto reduces the rate of growth in prostate cells, and may be a useful treatment in prostate cancer, in association with other treatments. Isoflavones specifically aimed at reducing prostatic disease are available in tablet or capsule form.

Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) should have regular Prostatic Specific Antigen tests (PSA). Prostatic Specific Antigen tests is a marker for worsening of the disease or for detecting cancer of the prostate.

Conventional treatments for prostate cancer are not very effective in prolonging the survival of the prostate cancer patient, but can reduce the severity of the symptoms. The prostate cancer treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy and hormonal manipulation with hormone blockers.
