HIV infection
is a viral infection that gradually destroys the body's immune system,
resulting in infections that are hard for the body to fight.
HIV
infection is spread in 3 main ways:
1. Sexual
intercourse
2. Direct
contact with infected blood
3. From an
infected mother to her unborn child. HIV may also be transmitted from a
nursing mother to her child.
If you know
you are at high risk for HIV infection, you should go for HIV screening
to determine your status so that you can take steps to reduce the risk
of transmitting the infection to your partner or baby.
Misconceptions about AIDS
AIDS is not
transmitted through normal day-to-day contact with a HIV infected person
at home, in school or at the workplace. You cannot normally get AIDS
from coughs, sneezes, shaking hands, hugging, sharing food and cutlery,
sharing toilets, etc. The AIDS virus has to go directly into your
bloodstream before it can infect you. If you are not sure of your HIV
status, avoid having sex until you have a blood test to confirm if you
are not infected by HIV virus.
