a dry mouth once in a while especially when they are nervous, upset,
under stress or one is fasting. However, it is not normal to be having a
dry mouth all the time.
If you are
having frequent dry mouth problems, you could be suffering from what
dentists call "xerostomia", a condition caused by a decreased function
of the glands that produce saliva. Saliva is the body's self-cleansing
mechanism and plays an important role in our mouths as it helps digest
food, prevents tooth decay and infection.
When you have
decreased saliva in your mouth, you may easily develop tooth cavities or
other mouth infections because saliva helps to neutralize the acids in
your mouth. It can also cause difficulties in tasting, chewing,
swallowing, and speaking. You may also have difficulty wearing dentures,
Your lips and the corners of your mouth may be cracked and dry as well.
Dry mouth can
be caused by ageing, radiotherapy, systemic diseases or as a side effect
to certain drugs. Fasting also causes dry mouth as there is decreased
