Bodybuilding - Therapy

Back to previous article about Bodybuilding - Therapy ...

The common black and blue mark is a local hemorrhage into the skin and subcutaneous tissue from rupture of minor vessels (capillaries), probably the result of a direct blow. Most bodybuilders just take such common bumps and bruises for granted. However, ice packs and compression can be used to reduce the swelling.

Gravity can work for as well as against you. Elevating the swollen extremity allows gravity to escalate the return of blood to the heart through the venous system and helps to reduce swelling. Think of it as having water run downhill rather than having to pump it uphill. Compression in the form of a pressure dressing is also useful in limiting the amount of bleeding into the tissues of an injured extremity.

Made aware that self-treatment of minor muscle pulls is fine, but for more serious injuries you should seek medical treatment. A severe injury left untreated can get worse and cause you an extended setback. However, not every doctor is experienced in sports medicine or in dealing with the particular needs and abilities of bodybuilders. In the event you need medical help, seek out the services of a doctor or, more specifically, an orthopedist qualified to help you with your bodybuilding injury.
