The first large-scale study on ovarian cancer
suggests that the more saturated fat (animal fat is a major source) a
woman eats, the more likely she is to develop ovarian cancer.
The suggested defense? Just a few cups of
vegetables and legumes a day. Can decrease a woman's chance of
developing ovarian cancer by 20%!
On the other hand, too much saturated fat (as
little as 10 grams a day) increases a woman's risk of developing ovarian
cancer.
Most American diets are full of saturated fat.
Do you eat ice cream, butter, ground beef, luncheon meats? Thumbs down.
All are high in saturated fat.
Saturated fat may increase estrogen (female
hormone) production. Vegetarian women have lower estrogen levels,
apparently because they don't eat as much saturated fat as their meat
eating counterparts. The association between saturated fat and estrogen
is still being tested.
Meanwhile, what can you do? Eat less saturated
fat and consume more vegetables and legumes.
