Collagen
Replacement Therapy
Collagen is a
naturally occurring protein that acts as a supporting matrix to the
skin, and it disappears as the skin ages, causing formation of wrinkles
and general degeneration of skin. Originally introduced as a facial
cream, collagen today, which is derived primarily from cowis skin, is
injected under the surface of the skin to plump out facial wrinkles such
as laugh lines and nose-to-mouth folds. The effects of collagen usually
last for approximately three months. A skin test is required as some
people are allergic to collagen. Side effects include redness, swelling,
itching and bruising.
Hyaluronic
Acid (Restylane)
A non-animal,
injectable, hyaluronic acid, restylane gel is a naturally occurring
substance found in the body which is designed to smooth away unwanted
wrinkles and enhance lips. Restylane is injected into the designated
area of skin in a quick 30 minute procedure. A skin test is not required
usually. Results can last for up to six months and any side effects,
including swelling and redness, generally disappear within two days.
Facial
Peels
Deep chemical
facial peels used to require a 2-3 day stay for the patient in hospital.
However, there are new milder facial peels on the market that can be
performed during lunchtime. These new "lunchtime peels" involve a 30-60
minute multi-stepped procedure of the application of mild doses of
alphahydroxy acids (AHAs). Also known as fruit acids, which exfoliate
and dissolve outer layers of the skin, these acids expose the newer skin
below which is tighter and smoother.
Mild facial
peels add a glow to dull, ageing skin, reduce the effects of uneven
pigmentation and help repair fine lines and acne damage. Side effects
include mild stinging and tingling sensations during application and
redness which disappears within a few hours.
