Cataract is yet another disease related to
aging. It is a gradual clouding over of the lens of the eye, causing
loss of vision. The damage is caused by free radicals or by too much
ultraviolet light from the sun affecting the proteins in the lens. Due
to the particular anatomy of the lens, damaged proteins aren't easily
repaired or eliminated, remaining inside the lens for life and causing
the cloudy areas.
It has been
discovered that people who have high levels of the antioxidant
carotenoids in their blood have a low incidence of cataract. This
suggests that by consuming more carotenoids such as beta carotene,
lutein and zeaxanthin from spinach, broccoli and tomatoes, the chances
of developing cataract may, just may, be reduced.
Conventional advice on preventing
cataract includes wearing sunglasses, consuming high-concentration
antioxidants and using low doses of aspirin.
In established cases, surgery may be
used to restore vision. Complementary treatments are not very successful
but include:
- acupressure on the bone below the
eye
- the Bates method of exercising and
re-educating the eye muscles
- Ayurvedic treatments
