What is RSS

What is RSS

RSS (really simple syndication) is an xml-based format for distribution and aggregating web content (such as news headlines and website updates). Using RSS, web content providers like 101 Bodybuilding can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, latest bodybuilding training, supplement, health guide. Other sites using RSS to deliver content to a wider audience include Google News, CNN News and others.

What does it mean when a website says is has an RSS feed available ?

RSS is a tool used by a website for condensing news headlines and information from the site into a bite-size summary, also known as a feed. You can use a program called a news aggregator or newsreader to display these RSS summaries (which usually include a headline, a short description of the article and a link to the full article) on your screen for a quick bite of news. Some sites also indicate their RSS feeds with a small orange XML button on the homepage. XML stands for Extensible Markup Language which is the code typically used for RSS feeds. Because you can have dozens of RSS feeds setup in a typical newsreader program, you can often browse the headlines and summaries of your favorite websites much faster than by clicking through a browser's bookmarks and waiting for each site to load. When you see an article you want to read in full, you can then click the link on the RSS summary to go to the host site.

How can I use RSS ?

Typical applications for consuming or using RSS include :

  • Using a program known as a News Aggregator to collect, update and display RSS feeds.
  • Incorporating RSS feeds into weblogs.

News Aggregator, also known as news readers, will download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial News Aggregators are available for download.

Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or "blogs". Blogs are web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging as a publishing tool is used for many purposes like traditional journalism, personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many other combinations in-between.
